DERMATOLOGISTS TIPS FOR HYPERPIGMENTATION
Happy Friday lovelies, I’m pretty sure that most of you all reading this little blog today are aware of pigmentation, and I’m also pretty sure you’re aware that it’s caused as a result of ageing and sun exposure etc. But what you may not entirely be aware that pigmentation can also be caused by skin injury or inflammation, friction, acne, hormones or even stress?!
And hyperpigmentation is on a whole another level, in a sense it’s a “hyper” version of pigmentation, causing the skin to darken. This discolouration of the skin, for those who are unaware, is a result of excess melanin – a naturally occurring pigment that gives the body their variety of colours.
Even though hyperpigmentation is ultimately harmless, being just a skin condition, it can leave those with hyperpigmentation (typically people with darker skin tones) feeling self-conscious about their skin. But feeling self-conscious? That’s not how we do things around here, we’re here to make you feel great about your skin, and with a bit of research, we’ve found methods of treating hyperpigmentation backed by actual dermatologists to help you all feel more confident with your skin.
According to Dr. Caroline Robinson MD, a dermatologist and founder of Tone Dermatology, she proposed a number of procedures that are effective when it comes to dealing with, maybe some of these you’d want to try for yourself?
One method that she recommended to help treat hyperpigmentation is to use prescription-strength medication that includes either tretinoin or hydroquinone. Why exactly? Well Dr. Cynthia Bailey found in her practice that tretinoins help to lighten and prevent age spots by building collagen to thicken and increase the structure of the skin. She also recommended that the younger a person is when they start applying tretinoin, the less likely they’ll receive wrinkles as they get older.
Another tip recommended by Dr Robinson is to use skincare products that provides the skin with a number of active ingredients to help boost the rate of recovery on your skin. Vitamin C, Kojic Acid, Azelaic Acid & Hibiscus Oil (hence why we use it our radiance and beauty sleep recovery balm ) are all recommended ingredients to treat the levels of hyperpigmentation on your skin. Hibiscus Oil in particular being amazing for sensitive skin when you aren’t able to use the acids..
Finally, while this one may be a little obvious to all, it is strongly recommended by all dermatologists to keep their sunscreen and apply it regularly. While yes, it’s true that people with darker skin tones aren’t as likely to burn as those with lighter skin tones, that doesn’t mean they don’t, and it doesn’t mean they should skip out on the sunscreen. Dr. Adil Sheraz , Consultant Dermatologist says that we should all be using sunscreen, regardless of skin tone due to the sun’s emission of ultraviolet radiation, with years of research confirming that UVA & UVB rays can cause melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. So it’s considered vital from all dermatologists to make sure that all skin types make themselves safe from UV rays, skin damage and cancer.
And so to all you lovelies who suffer from hyperpigmentation, I hope you’ve walked away with a bit more insight on how to combat your condition. Have a great weekend lovelies and I’ll see you soon.
Alex xoxo
